Consulting as a whole is one of those services that is widely used, but it’s not talked about as much as some of us might expect. Unfortunately, one of the things that I have heard far too many times is that a company will pay a search engine optimization consultant that ends up not adding any value to the digital marketing strategy of the paying company.
At the end of the day, it’s important to understand that an SEO consultant is not the person that is going to have the biggest difference on how successful this aspect of digital marketing is for your website. Instead, the expectation and results that using an SEO consulting service will bring should be closely connected to the idea of having an expert in your corner making sure that you don’t take any wrong steps as well as being able to depend on their expertise to make sure you are going in the right direction.
So, when should a company invest in this type of consultation service? The short answer is when you have an individual or digital marketing team in place that is ready to implement the recommendations and direction provided by the expert. If that means you as the business owner is going to take the advice given by the SEO consultant or you’re going to pass along their recommendations to a vendor or in-house marketing team, the important part is to have someone ready to execute the marketing strategy.
Additionally, for those of you that are not equipt to implement and follow the direction provided by a search engine marketing consultant, there is a way you can still work with one of these professionals. The best way to do so is to request that they provide you with a detailed report of their recommendations; which should include an analysis of your website and your industry as well as what the next course of action should be when you are ready for implementation.
With that out of the way, now let us consider some of the things to keep in mind when you feel you are ready to work with a vendor providing an SEO consultation service:
1) Only Hire SEO Consultants That Are Experts
For some of you, this might seem like an obvious recommendation. However, the fact that so many companies are complaining about the SEO consultation services they have invested in tells me that they are not working with real professionals. How can a company know whether or not an SEO consultant is worth the investment?
One way is to ask for referrals of recent customers and clients of theirs that have been happy with their services. Another way is to check their personal website to see how well it performs from a search engine optimization perspective; in other words, do they rank for any of the keywords related to the services they provide?
And finally, it is important that you’re not hiring a search engine optimization consultant just because they have an hourly rate that is cheaper, or affordable when compared to industry averages that are closer to $300 to $600 per hour. As I have said at least 173 times before on other articles published here at Nomvo.com… you get what you pay for.
2) Make Sure That You’re Available Budget Is Commensurate To Your Goals
What I mean by that is if you are in an industry where your SEO competitors are companies that are generating millions of dollars each year in revenue, and they likely have entire marketing teams or full-service SEO campaigns… logic would tell us that paying $1,000 or $2,000 to compete with these companies it’s completely unrealistic.
That’s not to say that you have to break the bank just to get an SEO consultation. However, if you are like most companies that are competing in very competitive industries online, the amount of research and analysis that a consultant will need to do in order to provide you with valuable expertise and direction is probably not going to come “cheap.”
3) Understand That Most SEO Consulting Services Are Not Designed To Do The Work For You
Aside from the obvious question that I get from companies about trying to succeed with this type of investment is the question of whether or not the consultant was supposed to implement the strategy and recommendations they provided.
So to address those kinds of concerns and issues, the answer is no. Most SEO consultants are not going to implement or execute the digital marketing strategy they provide you with; unless you pay them an additional fee for doing so or it is clearly included in the scope of work that you have purchased from them.
4) Be Ready And Willing To Listen To The Advice & Direction You Are Given
Unless you are hiring an SEO consultant that is supposed to be focused on only looking at and auditing your current strategy, you should expect them to tell you what you should do to succeed. Otherwise, it’s important to avoid the tendency to have debates about whether or not your strategy is better than the one the consultant is recommending.
I am not suggesting that there is no value in having an SEO consultant take a look at your existing strategy to confirm whether or not you’re on the right track. On the other hand, if you have little to no experience with this type of digital marketing and have never really succeeded with it… you’re going to do both yourself and the SEO vendor a favor to go along with the recommendations they provide it. Why do I say that? Because you are the one that hired them to get their help and their expertise on this type of internet marketing.
So in conclusion…
These are just a few important reminders that you should keep in mind if you are thinking about investing in an SEO consultation service provider. Of course, there are other important elements that you will want to bear in mind that will ensure that this business relationship is a success and ultimately brings you an ROI; but these are some of the most important that you cannot afford to forget.
